I love my Tarot Decks. I believe every Tarot reader has a way of enjoying doing readings. First off, I do not like rules very much. With that said, how you treat your deck is up to you. I will encourage you to follow your heart and your feelings for they will never steer you in the wrong direction. I do not agree with many theories that suggest there are “have to’s” for taking care of a deck. I will share with you the ways in which I treat and care for my deck and you can find a way that works for you and your lifestyle.
First, let’s address the theory that they need to be stored in a specific location or in a certain type of setting such as a silk cloth or a box. I have a favorite deck that I use for most of my readings. I store my cards in a cloth bag and carry them with me almost everywhere that I go. I find the bag to be appealing, energetic and I love the way it looks! Others store their cards in a box, wrapped in a silk cloth, on an altar, etc… Do what feels right. I find a sacredness in my Tarot deck, yet it is only a tool. You have everything you need within you. You decide how you would like to BE with this tool. Sometimes I even place a crystal on top of the deck to amplify the vibe of energy.
Second, there are the ways of shuffling. I personally shuffle the deck in a soft manner, using an overhand method. Here is a link for this terminology, thanks to WikiHow. https://www.wikihow.com/Shuffle-a-Deck-of-Playing-Cards
I find this method to mix the energy into the cards. That is all you are doing when you shuffle. Your energy is attracting like energy (law of Quantum Physics - like energy attracts like energy). Each card has a vibration of energy that matches your vibrations and frequencies of energy. Some people like to use the Rifle method. I find this method scatters the energy, which is great to mix up the cards but I find it to be more of a disruptive motion. Find your own way. When I am doing readings, I let people shuffle however they choose. You may be surprised how many people claim to not know how to shuffle cards. Encourage them to do their best. It is really the feeling that you are done shuffling that determines the reading. For this part, you must trust in yourself and the Universal Laws that are always working behind the scenes. Shuffle until you are done, not before, not after. There are no mistakes, only precision on the part of The Universe.
Lastly, I would like to address if others should be allowed to touch your cards. YES! I want others to be responsible for the messages they receive. Using the Tarot is a way to empowerment. The subtleties of empowerment start with the shuffle and discovering that you can do this for yourself. You can shuffle and become the observer of cards that relay information. Any chance you get to help someone empower themselves is a blessing. The reading is really a message from one’s Higher Self or Soul Essence. When able, have the querent shuffle their own cards. If I am reading for someone over the phone, and they do not own a deck to shuffle, I will shuffle for the querent. I ask my Higher Self to touch into the querent’s Higher Self so that I can get out of the way of the frequencies of energy present. I have built a lifetime of trust and acceptance that my Higher Self knows better than I do. I “kick it upstairs” to the Higher powers that be.
The best way to care for your Tarot Deck is your way. What you think and believe will make it so in your reality. Make sure your thoughts align with who you are and your Eternal Essence and all energy will flow with love and light.
